The Seagate Portable 2TB (STGX2000400) is a plug-and-play USB 3.0 hard drive: the bulk-backup and archive drive for small-office PCs. It is slow, cheap per gigabyte and needs no software. The one thing to know is that external hard-drive prices have more than doubled in under a year as hyperscalers bought up supply, so this is a shortage price.

When is a spinning hard drive still the right buy?

  • 2TB of archive space for documents, photos and backups where speed does not matter.
  • Around 120MB/s, so it is a backup target, not a working drive.
  • Fragile if dropped while spinning, and a one-year warranty.
  • Western Digital has said it is sold out for 2026, which explains the pricing.

Pricing reads: See current price on Amazon. A portable SSD such as the Samsung T7 is the better hand-off drive; this is the cheap archive. It appears in our office tech kit for a 10-person office; browse everyday tech.

Who should skip it

Anyone who carries the drive between sites or edits from it should buy an SSD. Anyone needing offsite protection should pair any drive with a cloud backup.
