ActiveCampaign is our usual answer when a business has outgrown newsletter tools like Mailchimp but cannot justify enterprise marketing platforms. Its automation builder — visual, branching, trigger-rich — is the best in its price class, and it treats email marketing, behavioural tracking and a lightweight sales CRM as one connected system.

The automation depth is the point. Site tracking feeds behaviour (pages visited, links clicked) into automations; lead scoring adjusts as contacts engage; conditional content personalises emails; and the CRM's deal pipelines can trigger — and be triggered by — marketing automations. Businesses that invest in mapping their customer journeys extract enormous value; businesses that just want to send a monthly newsletter are overbuying.

Honest caveats: contact-based pricing rises with list size, so list hygiene is an economic discipline here, not just best practice; the interface has accumulated depth that new users find busy; and the built-in CRM, while genuinely useful, is a companion to the marketing engine rather than a rival to dedicated CRMs. Pair it with Pipedrive or keep sales simple inside it — both patterns work.

Full hands-on testing of ActiveCampaign's current AI features is in progress; this profile reflects documented capabilities and our experience building client automations on Plus and Professional plans.
