Malwarebytes is anti-malware software known for cleaning infections that traditional antivirus misses, with real-time protection, ransomware rollback and web filtering in the paid tiers. For businesses it sells under the ThreatDown brand as per-endpoint protection with central management and endpoint detection and response (EDR). The one thing to know is that the free version is an on-demand scanner: it removes what it finds but does not protect in real time.

Where does Malwarebytes fit for a small business?

  • Pricing: a free scanner, Premium from about $3–5/mo per device, and business plans priced per endpoint (Malwarebytes pricing, August 2026).
  • ThreatDown gives a small business a single console to see every laptop, push updates and isolate a compromised machine without an IT department.
  • It coexists with the Windows and macOS built-in protection, which is how many small offices deploy it.
  • It sits in our Cybersecurity & IT category alongside 1Password and NordLayer.

Endpoint protection is one layer; a password manager and multi-factor authentication close more of the common attack paths.

Who should skip it

Businesses that already pay for an endpoint suite through Microsoft 365 Business Premium may be duplicating cover. Anyone expecting the free tier to prevent infections is using the wrong product; it cleans up, it does not block.
