Home Assistant Cloud is the paid subscription from Nabu Casa, the company behind the open-source Home Assistant platform. It adds three things to a Home Assistant installation: secure remote access without opening ports or configuring a proxy, integration with Alexa and Google Assistant, and cloud text-to-speech and speech-to-text. The one thing to know is that everything it does can be achieved for free with more effort, so you are paying for convenience and to fund the project.

What does Home Assistant Cloud add for a small office or home?

  • Remote access to dashboards and cameras from anywhere, set up in a few clicks.
  • Voice control of Home Assistant devices through Alexa and Google speakers.
  • Pricing: $6.50/month or $65/year (€7.50 / €75) with a 31-day trial (Nabu Casa pricing, August 2026). There is no free tier beyond the trial.
  • Subscription revenue funds the open-source project.

The DIY alternative is a reverse proxy or Cloudflare tunnel plus the free Matter and HomeKit bridges; that route works but needs maintenance. See our Home Automation category for the hubs it pairs with.

Who should skip it

Anyone comfortable running a reverse proxy already has the main feature. Households without Alexa or Google devices and no need for remote access gain little from the subscription.
