FreshBooks is accounting software built around invoicing: create estimates, send branded invoices, chase payments automatically and track expenses and time, with double-entry books behind it. It is designed for freelancers and service businesses whose owner does the admin, not for a finance department. The one thing to know is that there is no free plan and list prices are often discounted for new customers, so check the current price before comparing.

Where does FreshBooks fit for a service business?

Pricing starts with the Lite plan at about $19/mo after a trial (FreshBooks pricing, August 2026). Plans are tiered by number of billable clients, which is the figure to watch as you grow.

Its strengths are simplicity for non-accountants, recurring invoices and retainers, time tracking that flows straight to the invoice, and client-facing payment links. Project profitability reporting is useful for consultants and agencies.

Who should skip it

Product businesses that need inventory should look at QuickBooks, Odoo or Katana. Companies whose accountant insists on a particular platform should ask them first; FreshBooks' adviser network is smaller than Intuit's.
