Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform that takes a business from zero to selling online quickly: storefront themes, catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping labels and in-store checkout, with an app store covering almost everything else. It is used by companies from one-person brands to large retailers. The one thing to know is that the monthly plan is only part of the cost; apps, themes and payment processing add up, and using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments can incur extra fees.
Pricing: the Basic plan is about $29–39/mo depending on billing period (Shopify pricing, August 2026). There is no free tier, though low-cost introductory trials are common.
The strength is the ecosystem: thousands of apps and themes, a large pool of freelancers and agencies, and integrations with inventory and accounting tools such as Katana and QuickBooks. The risk of choosing it is low precisely because so many people can help.

Content-led businesses that sell a few items would do better on Squarespace or WordPress with a shop plugin. Merchants on thin margins should price the transaction fees against BigCommerce before deciding.
