The Mac mini M4 is Apple's small desktop with an NPU-equipped M4 chip and unified memory, and in our view the cheapest credible machine for running AI models locally. Redesigned in late 2024, it remains the value benchmark every 2026 mini PC is compared against. The one thing to know: the 16GB base model is tight for local language models.

Is the Mac mini M4 a good local-AI machine?

  • The base configuration has 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage.
  • Unified memory means the GPU can address the whole pool, which is what makes small models run well.
  • Serious local-AI users should configure 24GB or 32GB; the base model suits office work and light experimentation.
  • Compact, quiet and easy to hide behind a monitor at a front desk.

For a Windows or Linux equivalent with far more memory, see the GMKtec EVO-X2. Browse AI computing.

Who should skip it

Anyone planning to run 30B-plus models should budget for more memory or a different machine. Windows-only software shops should look at an x86 mini PC.
